Interested in Volunteering as a Chaperone?

Ski Bus Chaperone Overview

Our Ski Bus program relies on dedicated chaperones to help keep students safe, organized, and supported throughout the day. Official Ski Bus Chaperones have specific responsibilities, and before signing up, please review the requirements and duties below.

Requirements

  • Completion of a background check (school volunteer checks qualify). A small fee is required with your application.

  • Attendance at the Emergency Procedures Meeting (date TBD).

  • Arrival at least 15 minutes early to greet students as they board the bus.

  • Flexibility with return times—traffic and ferry delays are common.

  • Understanding that transportation is on school buses: not the most comfortable, but the most economical way to keep the program accessible.

Chaperone Duties

  • Take attendance using assigned rosters when boarding/disembarking buses and ferries.

  • Keep student emergency contacts on hand and follow protocols if needed.

  • Assist with lunch and snack distribution (system TBD) and ensure fairness.

  • Help maintain bus safety and order (no standing, no loud music, no disruptions).

  • Stay connected—keep your phone on for group texts while at Stevens Pass.

  • Check in with students at lunch and again before free-ski time.

  • At 3:30, account for every student. Some chaperones may help locate kids on the slopes using our designated meeting flag.

  • Assist students with gear and help carry supplies when needed.

Benefits of Being a Chaperone

  • Free skiing! Each official chaperone rides the bus and receives a complimentary lift ticket.

  • After student lessons and lunch check-ins, you’ll enjoy free-ski time until 3:30.

  • A chance to support local youth, build community, and keep the program safe and fun.

How Many Chaperones Are Needed?

  • Group Bus (5th–12th grade): 40 students + 4 chaperones (about 1 per 10 kids). If we fill a second bus, we’ll need 4 more.

  • Family Bus (K–4th grade + parent/guardian): 2 chaperones to assist with attendance, snacks, and protocols. Please note: Family Bus chaperones need to be available to assist all children, not only their own. This role works best for parents of older elementary kids who are more self-sufficient.

Chaperones do not need to ski (there are spaces at the resort to wait), but the role does require flexibility, attentiveness, and willingness to step in when needed.

We are grateful for your willingness to help! This program is powered by community volunteers, and your role makes a huge difference.
